Glynn, C.: Collision Speed from Individual Vehicle Deformation in Motorcycle to Car Collisions

EVU 2014 Copenhagen GlynnIt has been demonstrated in previous research that the collision speed in motorcycle or scooter to car collisions can be estimated from the wheelbase reduction of the motorcycle and penetration depth into the car. However, in many cases only a single vehicle is available for examination. This paper applies a previously published model for collision speed prediction from individual vehicle damage to a large sample of staged collisions (N = 73) and while showing a good representation of the data, shows a speed dependency in the error of the prediction not previously apparent. An empirical adjustment is applied to the previously published model to obtain a refined, more robust method for speed  estimation.
